During our three-night stay in Amsterdam, we decided to stay at Hotel De Hallen, a great design-focused boutique hotel in a very central part of the city.
What appealed to me about this hotel was that its design aesthetic vibed with mine, its rooms looked spacious and it was a great jumping off point for a first visit to the city in terms of getting around. For instance, it is just around the corner from Amsterdam’s famous food hall: Foodhallen. (PS: You can read our full, jam-packed travel guide to Amsterdam here)
Once we walked in, we were impressed by all of the artwork and eclectic pieces in the lobby, as well as a great restaurant and bar. Outside, there were tables and picnic set ups for cocktails in the sun. They also had a number of Instagrammable features at the hotel, like a swing in the lobby with a neon sign backlighting it.
After having a cup of coffee at the cafe in the lobby, we headed up to our room on the hotel’s third floor — it’s top floor. We were amazed when we opened the door and stepped into our suite, which had the most dramatic, high ceilings. These ceilings and oversized windows let in so much light and provided pretty views of the city, that it made me instantly feel at home.
The room had two bathrooms, and one of them had a shower and a standalone bath that they provided bath salts to soak in. I used that bath every evening after a day pounding the streets. There was also an excellent bottle of red wine waiting for us upon arrival.
We had a luxury Nespresso coffee maker in the room as well as ample space and closets for our baggage. They also provided two cocktails for us via voucher to use at their bar or outdoor space.
A great feature of the hotel was their beautiful bikes you can rent for a fee. Amsterdam is a city where bikes are the major mode of transit, and biking literally everywhere during our stay allowed us to see so much more of the city, behave like locals, and even get some exercise in. Our hotel was within a ten-minute bike ride of pretty much every major sightseeing attraction on our list. I’m also told it is near tram stops, which could be helpful in the colder months.
At night, it was great to return to our room to a comfortable bed and luxurious room. They also have a beautiful bar in the lobby as well as a bar outside with wooden picnic tables.
The hotel provides great value in terms of the price per night. We would absolutely stay here again on a return trip to Amsterdam.
