What You Need Now: Zig Zags

By Chevaun Jackson

The zigzag is one of those prints, like animal print, that’s bold and busy and has to be done either subtly with one item or boldly as a full dress or pantsuit to make a statement. There is no middle ground with zigzags, animal print, or even certain styles of polka dots. Prints can define an outfit or accentuate subtly. The zigzag look is back again this season although, thankfully, it is in its toned-down fashion. Zigzag prints can be found on accessories like scarves (a la Tolani), hand bags and definitely dresses by such designers as Chanel, Naeem Khan, Balmain and Magic Eye.

If you’re going to rock this look, either get the ones with subtle edges that appear more like wave lines or be bold and commit to the zig zag print and get the large bold ones that look like lightening streaks—a la rocker chic. They can be universally flattering as accessories but once they hit the body they tend to either make a person seem wide if horizontal in nature or long if vertical, so just keep that in mind when trying to master the zigzag look. If going with a zigzag dress there aren’t too many ways to wear the trend the wrong way. It can be dressed or cute and casual. All you have to do is pick one or two hues from the dress and match it to color-coordinate your accessories. Keep in mind the zigzag is a fairly busy pattern, so steer clear of any printed accessories and stick to monochromatic purses and heels. Ditto with the makeup—a fresh and simple face will complement, not compete with, your dress.

Celebs sporting the look include Kim Kardashian, Emily Blunt, Hilary Swank, Jessica Alba, and Whitney Port.
