Christmas time in New York City is one of the most magical times of the year, and as a native New Yorker, it’s only right that I share my knowledge with you all. Read on for my ultimate guide to Christmas in New York City.
If you’re looking for an Instagrammable Christmas moment, Rolf’s is it. This German gastropub is decorated all Christmas long with thousands of Christmas lights and ornaments, pretty much covering every inch of the space. Sip some mulled wine and get a warm pretzel while taking in the sights. Warning: the closer to Christmas it gets, the more crowded Rolf’s gets, so be prepared for crowds.
Iceskating
There are a few iconic ice-skatign rinks to choose from, each with their own selling points. Head to the ice rink at Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park or Central Park’s Wollman Rink and practice those triple tow loops! For something a little more chic, The Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District also has a skating rink, albeit a very small one.
The Rockefeller Center Tree & Nearby Store Fronts
The most famous tree in the world is set up in Rockefeller Center all Christmas season, creating the most perfect selfie backdrop. After, head across the street to Fifth Avenue to see all of the storefronts and windows decorated for Christmas. My personal favorite is Saks Fifth Avenue, which has both lights and the most beautiful window installations. Don’t miss the light show at night on the windows!
Bryant Park Winter Village
The area surrounding Bryant Park’s ice rink is filled with temporary stalls creating a beautiful Christmas village where you can get hot cocoa, treats and shop for ornaments and other fare by artisans.
Christmas Lights in Dyker Heights
This is a bit of a trek, but trust us when we say it is SO worth it. In a Brooklyn neighborhood that is primarily Italian, a longstanding tradition takes place each year where neighbors decorate their homes with over-the-top Christmas lights. Each house is crazier than the next, making you wonder what these people’s electricity bills look like come December. It’s such a fun night out and has a great community feel to it.
Radio City Christmas Spectacular
If you’re visiting, you would be remiss not to see this iconic show and the accompanying Rockettes. This is truly a family-friendly event that will position you to also see the Rockefeller Tree, go ice skating and see the decorated store windows on Fifth Avenue just across the way!
Frozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity
The frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity is unbeatable, and even worth the wait to get into this famous Manhattan restaurant. The cozy atmosphere coupled with your hot chocolate makes for a great pairing!
