Tweed is a classic fabric that Chanel has adopted as one of the French fashion house’s signature looks. The vintage Chanel tweed jacket is one of the most iconic pieces in fashion history. However, tweed was first originated by Scottish weavers looking for a denser option for outerwear. The name tweed was born when a London merchant misread the handwriting of the originally word “tweel” and turned it into “tweed.”
Tweed became the cloth of the elite. Coco Chanel was drawn into this fabric and wanted it to pair with jackets and coats. In 1924, Chanel enlisted a Scottish factory to produce her iconic tweed fabrics.
In the mid 50s and 60s, Chanel reintroduced her tweed jackets with pastel colors and this quickly became a status symbol of British nobility. This look quickly climbed up the fashion ladder when Jaqueline Kennedy wore her pink Chanel suit several different times during JFK’s presidency and also during his assassination.
Today, Chanel’s tweed is still a fan favorite all around for fashionistas everywhere. The late Karl Lagerfield has always continued to reimagine the traditional fabric and twist it into something amazing, sending it down the runway is nearly every Chanel fashion show he’s produced. (You can read our tribute to the designer, here.) Retailers and designers have adopted this tweed trend to those wanting to look without the price.
