If you’re a Hamptons newbie, navigating the Long Island stretch of beaches can be a bit overwhelming. I’ve gone each summer for the last decade, and decided to put together the absolute musts for a perfect weekend in the Hamptons in our Hamptons itinerary.
There are lots of different towns in the Hamptons, each with their own feel. You’ll probably want to spend the majority of your time in Montauk, which is the area furthest from Manhattan. It has great beaches and lots of amazing bars and is full of younger clientele. You’ll also want to rent a house in Montauk as it’s expensive and hard to get from one part of the Hamptons to the other, so you’re best off renting near the spots you’ll be going.
Here’s everything you’ll want to do on a weekend in the Hamptons. And, if you’re curious what to wear for a weekend in the Hamptons, check out our Hamptons Style Guide.
Daytime in the Hamptons:
The Hamptons has tons of options during the day, depending on what type of mood you’re in. Read on for a mix of activities ranging from the beach to daytime parties and everything in between.
Surf Lodge: Surf Lodge is an institution in the Hamptons. This Montauk beach shack and restaurant is a scene where you can regularly spot celebrities. You can go to Surf Lodge day or night, but our favorite thing to do is to go around 4pm for some daytime drinks in the back. Each weekend they have a live performance around sunset, which is amazing. Stay for a few more drinks after before heading to dinner or your next spot.
The crowd is very good looking and high energy. It really is the perfect place for day or night drinks.
Wolffer Vineryard: If you’re looking for a more tame day in the Hamptons, you can visit rosé vineyard Wolffer in Sagaponack. It’s a great spot to go with girlfriends or a group for a day of wine tasting in the sun. The Hamptons is rosé central, so this is a good introduction to the area.
Gurney’s Beach Party: If you’re looking for beach and bottle service, the beach party at Gurney’s Hotel in Montauk is the best spot. Gurney’s is a beautiful five-star hotel right on the beach, and each weekend, it has a DJ spinning while beachgoers lay out and sip champagne and rosé. It is a total scene and really fun and there is a strong likelihood you will be over served.
Ditch Plains: One of my favorite low-key activities to do out in the Hamptons is to rent bikes and take them to the Montauk lighthouse and Ditch Plains beach. This beach is popular with surfers because of the big waves. So, take your bikes out and watch the surfers ride waves while eating from food trucks parked at the beach.
Workout Among Celebrities: The Hamptons, and specifically Montauk, has all of Manhattan’s best boutique fitness classes such as Soul Cycle, SLT and Barry’s Bootcamp. Check yourself in to front row at one of these classes and work up a sweat beside celebrities.
Dinner & Drinks in the Hamptons:
Crow’s Nest: Crow’s Nest in Montauk is a high end restaurant in a beautiful setting with outdoor seating. It can be a bit of a scene to get into it, but the food is delicious and it’s a great place for a date or group dinner.
Navy Beach: Navy Beach is a great spot to watch the sunset. Grab a glass of rosé and watch the show from the beach. The doors is also great it you decide to stay for dinner.
Southhampton Social: I love this restaurant and lounge in Southhampton. Get a late reservation at around 9:30 and then stay once they clear the tables for some dancing. I especially love the outdoor space in the back.
Ruschmeyers: This indoor-outdoor bar is like Disneyland for Hamptons-goers. The bar has outdoor games like giant Jenga pieces, ladder ball and other games. It also has hammocks and cool places to congregate. There is a DJ inside spinning as people dance. It’s always a great time.
