Top Looks from LA Fashion Week

By Francesca Claybrook

LA’s Fashion Week is a lot smaller than the big five (New York, London, Milan, Paris, Tokyo), but that doesn’t mean we can’t show them some love! Check out some of my favorite looks from LA Fashion Week, which wrapped up a few days ago.

wong
Sue Wong’s presentation included fourteen dresses, almost all of which had a ‘20s, flapper feel to them. Likewise, the models wearing the clothes also had vintage hair and makeup. While there were some bright colors among the dresses, the majority were neutrals. My favorite was this gold dress – I love the embroidery, and how the dropped waist recalls the ‘20s without being an obviously dropped waist, as many of the other dresses had. See all 14 looks here.
valerj

Valerj Pobega showed looks that seemed grunge-inspired, some with black paint dripping down the fabric, and one that looks like a hard rock kilt. I wasn’t a big fan of the black face masks the models all wore, but I did like this little number here. I like how the skirt is full – it looks like fun! This is definitely a line to check out for all you punk-rock princesses out there. View the entire presentation here.

Vensel06
Mike Vensel showed a collection with similar colors to other S/S 2011 collections we’ve featured here – lots of black and white (my favorite! I hate it when colors come back in style…) I liked this little white dress, the sixth look in the collection. It looks comfortable and casual, with enough interest to keep it from being just a boring t-shirt dress. See the rest of his collection here.

millinery
The LA Millinery Guild held a fashion show featuring clothes by Project Runways’s Mondo Guerra, who has been one of my favorites. True confession: I’m terrified of mixing patterns (it intimidates me!) and he always does it so flawlessly that it gives me hope for a future in which I can successfully mix and match some patterns by myself. That’s why I love this particular look, because it’s something I never would have thought to put together, but it looks wonderful! See the rest of Guerra’s clothes paired with some amazing hats here.

That’s all for LA, but stay tuned for an update from Tokyo!
