The Feng Shui FloorplanOpen floor plans are all the rage at the moment. If you browse through the home designs of home builders in Sydney, you will notice the prevalence of a minimalist approach to home design in 2020. Creating a cohesive looking home is important when working with an open floor plan as it allows all the rooms in the home to flow with one another, free from disruption. In today’s article, we have a look at some simple tricks that will allow you to create a cohesive flow in your home space. Read on to find out more!

1. Cohesion in Colour

One of the easiest ways in which you can create a feeling of cohesion within your home is by working with colour. Colour scheme is first and foremost when it comes to creating a seamless flow in your home, and selecting a colour scheme that you love is step one. We highly recommend choosing a consistent colour palette for all rooms in order to connect them with one another. This doesn’t mean that your home needs to look boring though – you can work on a base colour scheme and add pops of colour in the form of artwork, furniture and accessories throughout your home.

2.   Consistency in Materials

Another incredible way of creating cohesion when building your home is to ensure that you are consistent with the materials and elements throughout your home. This means using similar materials in each room, whether that may be wooden furniture, matching blinds or curtains and similar fixtures and fittings around the home. Think matching cabinetry, cabinet handles, doorknobs and lighting styles. Keeping these elements consistent throughout the home is a great way to create a sense of cohesion that won’t cost a fortune.

3. Avoid Conflicting Styles

When it comes to cohesion, avoiding conflicting styles is of utmost importance. This means sticking to one vision instead of trying to make each room in the home its own unique space. For example, if you have a modern kitchen that boasts stone benchtops, modern appliances and metal finishings, you’ll want to avoid placing a rustic or vintage-looking dining table next to it. Similarly, if your home is built in a contemporary or minimalist style, it is important that your furniture and decorations are in line with a modern theme. Avoiding a clash of styles is one of the best ways to ensure your home flows seamlessly from one room to another.

4. Pay Attention to Traffic Flow

One of the most important contributors to cohesive home design is uninterrupted traffic flow. A well thought out floor plan is step one in creating a good traffic flow within the house, but even the best floor plan can be outdone by poor furnishing. One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is introducing too many items of furniture into the home. Not every spot in your home needs to be filled with something. In fact, having a few bare spaces will allow your home to feel larger, tidier and more contemporary. We also recommend that you avoid blocking hallways or doorways with items and follow the natural traffic flow of your floor plan when arranging your furniture.

5. Channel a Specific Mood

Last but certainly not least, the best way to ensure cohesion in the home is to identify the mood you would like to channel and design each room accordingly. For example, if you’re going for a zen theme at home, you’ll probably want to ensure that all the rooms in your home are kept bright and free from clutter, with furniture kept to a minimal. You may also want to include a house plant in every single room, or add a beachy element if you’re going for a sunkissed mood. Having a mood to channel is one of the best ways to ensure that cohesion is at the forefront of your home without even having to think too deep into it.

Creating cohesion when building or planning your home needn’t be a daunting task. By following some of the tips we have mentioned above, you’ll find that creating cohesion is a lot easier than you ever imagined.
