After getting engaged in May, I’ve been trying to step up my workouts because my wedding dress is not forgiving at all. The goal is to lose around 12 pounds and tone up. Prior to getting engaged, I worked out five times a week on average, but I wanted to increase my workouts to six times a week and also increase the intensity in order to get the results I want. I’ve also become more strict with my diet, trying to eliminate carbs and sugars, and am following the Whole30 Diet (You can read my daily food diary and recipes for following Whole30 here.)
In order to step up my workouts, I knew that I would need to take classes regularly because that’s when I find myself pushing myself the hardest. But, I didn’t want to do my favorite classes, SoulCycle and Barry’s Bootcamp, six times a week at $35 a class, because that would quickly add a lot of expenses to our already ballooning wedding budget.
So, we began using the Peloton bike at the gym and I explored the Peloton app and was so impressed by its value. For $20 a month (less than one boutique fitness class) I now have unlimited access to a whole suite of great workouts on demand, ranging from their spin class, running class, boot camp (which is like Barry’s or Orange Theory) and other offerings. (Update: we later bought our own Peloton bike during quarantine and it has been a LIFE SAVER. Especially now that I have a baby, it makes it so that I have no excuses not to work out)
My husband and I do Peloton’s spin classes pretty religiously, and have our favorite instructors. My favorite classes are the “Groove” classes, which are choreographed to the beat of the music and incorporate a lot of my favorite moves from SoulCycle — tap backs, push ups, etc. Cody and Emma Lovewell have some really great Groove classes that make me feel almost like I am in the saddle at SoulCycle. Having the metrics, such as my calories burned, is a big motivator for the classes and something I wish SoulCycle would provide. There are weeks when we will do five spin classes each and I love knowing that it would have cost around $180 had I bought classes at SoulCycle, but instead I spend about a dollar a class and can do so from my own home.
I know from past experience that running is the quickest way to transform my body, so for the past year, my fiancé and I have been taking their running class and bootcamp classes, which are half running, half weights and toning. Prior to this app, I would get bored running on the treadmill without any guidance and would end up running for a short period of time before going to a less intense machine. But, with the guidance of Peloton instructors, I fly through 45 minute and hour-long classes regularly.
Our favorite instructor is Olivia Amato because of her playlists and great workouts. For spinning, we love Cody Rigsby. The classes range from 10 minutes to an hour and a half, so there’s truly something for everyone, and it’s such a great, low-cost way to get the boutique fitness experience at your home gym along with boutique fitness results.
