While we may be stuck at home this summer, we can still escape mentally and reading is a great way to do that! We have curated a list of 10 great beach reads to help you escape reality.
The Vanishing Half: Two identical sisters grew up together, but ran away at age 16 and began leading separate lives. This book tells the story of each sister and how the lasting influence of the past shapes a person’s decisions, desires, and expectations. This book is easy to get lost in and will make you think about how you became who you are today.
We Were Liars: We Were Liars is the perfect summer mystery. Four friends whose relationship turns destructive, the dark secrets of a girl, and a family putting on appearances make up a novel full of twists. You will binge read this novel just to get to the surprising twist ending.
Midnight Sun: If you were a Twilight lover back in the day, you will absolutely love this recommendation. Midnight Sun is Edward’s version of the events in Twilight. Stephanie Meyer transports us back into the Twilight world full of romance and vampires, of course.
The Wedding Party: If you’re looking for a sweet romance novel, The Wedding Party is a great read for you! During their best friends Wedding week, two sworn enemies have a fling that eventually leads to love. A cheesy novel for the hopeless romantics.
Where The Crawdads Sing: Where The Crawdads Sing is the tale of a “marsh-girl” who everyone in a small North Carolina town fears. When she finally begins to open up to people, the unthinkable occurs. This story focuses on the beautiful and violent secrets of nature while showing that we can never truly escape our childhood.
Sex and Vanity: From the author of Crazy Rich Asians comes Sex and Vanity. The story of a woman torn between two men, one who her family would approve of and the other who she is trying desperately not to fall in love with.
Emergency Contact: Emergency Contact is a cute novel about the realities of teenage awkwardness when it comes to love. The main characters swap numbers where they only text each other- thus, avoiding the awkwardness of ever seeing each other in person. An adorable read to take your mind off the world.
Playing With Matches: Playing With Matches is one of the best romantic comedy novels for summer. Follow matchmaker Sasha’s journey through her boyfriend’s betrayal and meeting a new man, a writer with a sweet southern drawl. This book is super sweet while also being laugh-out-loud funny. You will love Sasha’s story of finding her place in a Tinder-driven society.
Mexican Gothic: Mexican Gothic takes a twist on traditional gothic horror. When the main character receives a letter from her newly-wed cousin asking for help, she immediately heads to the rescue. When she arrives, she finds herself thrown into a world full of family secrets, violence, and madness. If you are a reader that loves a thrill, this novel is for you!
Untamed: If you’re looking for a memoir that will inspire you, look no further. Untamed is Glennon Doyle’s story of self-acceptance as a woman. Her memoir speaks on living life for yourself and remembering that you are important. Women everywhere will feel inspired and love themselves even more after finishing Untamed.
Red, White & Royal Blue: This book is escapist gold. It’s a cross-Atlantic love story between the President’s son and the Queen of England’s grandson and is just what I needed this summer to get my mind of of the state of this country.
