Spring Trend Watch: Maxi Skirts

By Francesca Claybrook

My inspiration for this trend comes straight from the runway:  Jil Sander’s Spring 2011 collection, to be more specific.  I love the way that this trend was styled throughout the collection (which was full of maxi skirts like the one pictured above).  The oversized skirts paired perfectly with simple white t-shirts, which leaves you plenty of room to personalize the look with accessories.  The best way to wear this look is to keep proportions in mind – since maxi skirts are usually long and loose, make sure your top is fitted so that your shape doesn’t get lost in all the fabric.

This skirt from ASOS is crinkly and light, but could easily be dressed up for the evening as well as dressed down for daytime. $80.69 at ASOS.com.

The BCBGMaxAzria skirt pictured above is the same; the casual white tank it’s pictured with creates a low-key look, but add some heels and some sparkly jewelry you’d be ready for a night on the town. $88 at Saks Fifth Ave.

There’s no law saying these maxi skirts have to be a neutral color.  Just check out this bright skirt from Zara.   And if you really want to be on-trend this spring, try pairing a maxi skirt with the season’s hottest shoe style – flatforms.
