After years of considering buying the Dyson’s Supersonic hair dryer, my husband bought it for me as my birthday gift this year. At $400, this item is a splurge. But, my hair typically takes 45 minutes from start to finish between blow drying, straightening and then curling it to get the big, loose waves that I love. A Dyson supersonic’s claim to fame is that it very quickly blow dries hair in a way that looks like a blowout and minimizes frizz, which is a big problem for me.
After picking the Dyson up from Sephora I couldn’t wait to wash my hair and see the results. I waited until after a pretty rigorous workout to wash my hair and then started the experiment. First I unpacked the hairdryer and noticed how incredibly light it is. It’s probably 1/3 or 1/4 of the weight of a typical hairdryer and it also makes it easy to pack on trips because it won’t add to my baggage allowance. It comes with a few attachments such as the diffuser if you have curly hair, and two other attachments depending on what types of pressure you want on the blow dryer. You could also use the hairdryer as it is without any attachements for a quick blow dry.
I watched a few videos on YouTube before I got started just to make sure that I was using the blow dryer right. After towel drying my hair, I used the bigger attachment just to start getting some of the water out of it so that I can use the more precise attachment for a blowout. Once I turned the Dyson on I was blown away by how quiet it was and the unique feel of the air coming out of it. Even during the quick blow dry to get my hair a little bit dryer I was really impressed by how quickly it got it to about 60% to 70% dry in just a matter of two minutes. I have long, very thick coarse hair that typically takes a lot of heat and hot tools to tame it into shape. So, my typical routine requires me to use my regular hair dryer just to get my hair dry so that I could then straighten it. After a typical regular hair dryer, my hair is very frizzy and uncontrollable. With the Dyson, after the first two minutes of just drying it, it was super smooth and straight and didn’t have any knots. So far, so good in my eyes. (PS: Read our review of the Dyson Airwrap here)
I then removed the first attachment which is magnetically attached to the dryer and added the other attachment that is meant for the actual blowout and styling. I broke my hair into sections and began it to blow out each one. Within eight minutes, the rest of my hair was completely dry and styled. I couldn’t believe how smooth and frizz-free my hair looked. I also couldn’t believe that start to finish it took 11 minutes to blow dry my hair. My hair was so nicely done it that I could have left it as is which I did, and if I wanted to curl it, I could have skipped the flat iron part of my routine.
I immediately texted my husband to tell him what amazing results I achieved with the Dyson. When we bought the Dyson at Sephora I was a little bit skeptical and I inquired about the return policy just in case it didn’t live up to the hype. At $400, this is a bit of an investment so I wanted to make sure that I was totally in love with it and it really took time off my routine in order to keep it. Needless to say, I’m totally keeping it.
The next morning after waking up I noticed that my hair was still super smooth and didn’t frizz like it normally does overnight. It was almost like my hair after waking up after professional blowout at Drybar. Since I only wash my hair 2 to 3 times a week, this will make my life easier on days that I don’t wash it since I won’t have to put a blow dryer through it on those mornings to restyle it.
I can say that the Dyson has taken about 30 minutes off of my getting ready time and my routine which to me is invaluable. Because my hair is typically very frizzy and takes a long time to dry and style, this purchase is a bit of a game changer for me. I am really happy that I first tried out the Dyson Airwrap and ruled that out because it would’ve been one or the other in terms of us buying it, and at $600 those results were just not great for my hair type. The Dyson Supersonic totally was worth the investment especially if it continues to shave time off of my daily routine and is well-built.
