When it came time to plan our wedding, we had a few non-negotiables. We wanted a killer band, beautiful décor and LOTSA sweets. On the last bit, I had always pictured a giant tower of cupcakes in my favorite flavors so that guests could have a feast of my favorite things. We were keen on this being the centerpiece of our sweets display.

For this, I turned to Cupcake DownSouth, which is my favorite cupcake maker in Charleston. There’s a reason they’ve been voted the best cupcake in all of South Carolina! During the wedding planning process, we’d visit them and pick on cupcakes to ease wedding-planning stress. They have two locations – one in Mount Pleasant and one in downtown.

Early on in the planning process, I contacted Cupcake DownSouth and explained my vision and they had myself and my now-husband in for a tasting and to present a few different options for our desserts.

First off, cupcake tasting was our favorite tasting of the entire planning process. We entered Cupcake DownSouth in Mount Pleasant and were seated at a table teeming with the most elaborate cupcakes to try. Cupcake DownSouth has dozens of flavors as well as seasonal flavors, so we picked eight to try from, which was a hard task to narrow the list down!

At the table, we cut into each of the eight, tasting the beautiful, moist cake and delicious buttercream frostings to help make our decision. In the end, we chose: Vanilla Bean, Red Velvet, Key Lime and Salted Caramel chocolate. We had the choice of doing one full-sized cupcake per guest, or choosing three minis of their choosing per guest, and we chose the latter since this was such a whimsical way reminiscent of tea at the Madhatter’s house to have our guests indulge their sweet tooth.

What I loved was how amenable the staff at Cupcake DownSouth was. Firstly, they asked for our wedding colors so that they could incorporate that into the design of our cupcakes, they provided us with a gorgeous rustic cake stand to serve as our dessert centerpiece and show off the cupcakes and the presentation of the cupcakes themselves the day of was so ornate and fantastical.

The chocolate caramel cupcakes, for instance, had the most delightful frosting with a pool of gooey caramel in the middle of it with glittery flecks of gold sprinkles. It was just delightful. We also loved the swirled green frosting for the key lime cupcakes. The red velvet cupcakes had fluffy white swirls of cream cheese frosting topped with a candy red heart at the top.

Guests absolutely loved our cupcakes and the fact that they were able to try so many different flavors. They presented just gorgeously and complimented our décor so well, which was a nice added benefit of working so closely with the team at Cupcake DownSouth. There’s a reason they’ve been featured by The Ellen Show, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Southern Living Magazine!

My husband and I even boxed up a few of the cupcakes to have the next day and celebrate our whirlwind wedding. It was our take on saving the first tier of a wedding cake and it was so delightful. We’d gladly suggest partnering with Cupcake DownSouth for your wedding or event – their professionalism, beautiful (and tasty!) cupcakes and collaboration are unparalleled.
