Riiiiight before the Coronavirus set in, my husband and I bought an apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. While the timing could have been better (much better), we were still excited to own our own home in what is our ideal neighborhood and on the same block as Prospect Park.
Our neighborhood is filled with beautiful brownstones dating back to the 1800s which have so much charm. But, that also meant that while our apartment had great bones, the decor had much to be desired. With that in mind, we set out on a full gutting and renovation of our kitchen and bathroom. (You can shop the items we used at the end of the post).
The bathroom when we bought it had awful pink tile, a dated tile floor that looked dirty and an old tub. The decor just looked really dated and out of fashion and didn’t make great use of the space, which is pretty small.
Heading into the renovation, I knew I wanted to better use the space and layout and also create a beautiful bathroom that had little touches that spoke to the time period of the apartment. We decided on a color palette of mostly white to brighten the space up with touches of black and gold appliances to execute on this vision.
I was deadset on a bright, clean palette and the most important component of this was a vibrant white wall tile. I wanted a matte finish, which proved hard to find, but we found it at Floor & Decor.
Our appliances and hardware was of equal importance. For our appliances, we turned to the experts at Kohler, and were directed to their Purist range of brass fixtures that have a modern elegance. You can shop our shower head and fixtures here: Rain Showerhead Shower Slidebar; Purist Valve Trim .
I spent a ton of time scouring the web and home stores for the best lighting and medicine cabinet combination, as well. So many medicine cabinets seemed dated or had silver trim, which would have clashed with our design. Luckily, I found this gorgeous Vintage Medicine Cabinet from Pottery Barn, $379. They also have it in other finishes, like silver, and it can be embedded in the wall if you’d like it to be flush. Our scone above the medicine cabinet is the Theo sconce from Cedar & Moss., $319. It also comes in different finishes, such as silver and black.
Our vanity is the Elyssa from Allmodern, $391. It came with silver hardware, but we bought brass to replace it.
We had our contractor create niches in the wall of the shower to have a clean way to store our products and shampoo without having to hang anything in the shower.
Overall, we are thrilled with the renovation and seeing our vision come to life. The before and after photos show a massive upgrade to the space, in not only making it look beautiful, but for making the small space more functional and better using the layout.
