The Equestrian look trotted its way into the collections of designers for the fall 2010 season. Personally, most of the jockey looks look frumpy. When it comes to the jockey look the pattern and color are what make it hit or miss. As far as the “ spectator” look, it’ s a bunch of heavy furs and layers that speak more to the old world way of things. They are more consistent in aesthetic beauty than the jockey look but definitely set the tone of earlier decades of the 1900s of British royalty and high society—but not to fear since the revisiting of old styles (aka retro) is being tugged on this season. However, mixing modern accessories with these traditional English pieces (or the opposite) will keep everything in style proportion.
When incorporating this trend into your everyday wardrobe, rather than going for a head- to-toe galloping through the woods look, which would come off as more of a Halloween costume, stick to just a few horse-riding inspired pieces at a time. Try pairing sleek riding pants with a simple top and blazer for a chic look. Or pair riding boots with a pair of nice jeans or riding leggings like these by Joe’s and a relaxed jacket for that androgynous look— or a pair of distressed denim and a preppy plaid jacket in a masculine shape instead. For the edgy woman a hacking jacket with a slim, body conscious mini skirt would add something of flair.
Designers who have taken a stride into this concept include Christian Dior (shown) who gave the classic equestrian look a masculine touch, A.F. Vandevorst who went for a sleeker and more minimalist style, and Hermès redefined the classy lady in a long skirt who sat sideways on her horse.
Celebs who have ventured into the woods upon horseback include Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Saldana.
