Holiday Gift Guide 2010: Gifts for your Roommate

By Francesca Claybrook

Let’s face it:  roommates are some of the most important people in your life, because if nothing else, you see them every single day.  So getting them a good present is a must, because otherwise they can shoot you evil stares every morning for the rest of the year.  Just kidding!  But seriously, here are some great gift ideas for your wonderful roomie:

Pure White Ceramic Vases from West Elm.  Brighten up your roomie’s space with some of these simple and elegant white vases.  Buy one, two, or a set of three depending on your budget, and for extra good roommate points, fill them with flowers instead of wrapping them up.  These stylish vases are from West Elm starting at $9.

Everyday Italian by Giada de Laurentiis.  Let’s be honest, everyone should know how to cook at least one thing, and what could be better than pasta?  My senior year of college my three roommates and I had Family Dinner Night every Wednesday – we took turns cooking and we all had dinner together every Wednesday night.  Those are some of my best memories from college, and it’s a great way to spend quality time with your roomie(s).   Plus, you’ll get a great dinner out of it! Available from Barnes and Noble for $22.51.

Acorn “Marlow” slippers.  Does the tile floor in your bathroom make your roomie scream on cold winter mornings?  Get her some slippers!  As an added bonus, these are cute enough to wear even when you have company over.  Get these from Nordstrom for $54.95.

Kate Spade New York Illustrated Mugs.  Cold weather means it’s time for hot drinks – tea, coffee, hot chocolate, apple cider…the list goes on.  These mugs make the perfect gift for one roommate (you can get her the whole set) or multiple roommates (you can get a different one for each of them – and maybe one for yourself!)  Plus, the watercolor illustrations are so much more beautiful than a plain mug, or one with some kind of saying on it.  These mugs are available at Bloomingdale’s.

“Lila” earrings from Marc by Marc Jacobs.  What girl doesn’t need something shiny in her ears for New Year’s Eve?  These earrings are adorable (yes, that’s a safety pin the glass beads are hanging on!), but they’re also versatile.  Get them from Nieman Marcus for $58.
