Gossip Girl Fashion Recap: Damien Darko

By Francesca Claybrook

Gossip Girl’s colors were muted this episode, as if the costume designers knew that this insane series of winter storms was going to bury New York and make it feel like it will never be warm again.  I do love a black, white, and gray palette, but given the winter slump I could have used a little bit of brightening up.  The purple bag Serena carried when she visited the halfway house jumped out at me – I think I need one of those to brighten up my winter wardrobe as well.  Serena’s party dress was also a highlight of the show for me, until I saw the cutout.  If that cutout hadn’t been there I think the dress would have been much better (not to mention classier), because I loved the bodice and the halter.  I wasn’t so sure about Blair’s party dress – something about the asymmetrical sleeves seemed just a little too asymmetrical to me – but I liked that both dresses were short.  That was actually a nice change from the number of floor-length dresses the cast is usually clad in.  Overall, though, things seemed a little dark.

But then, this happened.  I can count a zillion things that are wrong with this outfit.  In fact, I don’t know where to start.  Let’s just say that this outfit might be appropriate if Blair was in Miami, and this happened to be one of the few days a year the temperature dropped below 50 degrees.  Otherwise, I say no, never mind, I’ve changed my mind.  Back to cold, gray New York for me.  I don’t think I can take this much brightness and print all in one outfit (and shorts, no less!) in the dead of winter.  Bring on the coats, please!
