Fashion Month Trends We Hope Die

By Chevaun Jackson

During fashion week there were a few styles that were presented that we hope DO NOT catch on. The top three fashion faux pas are:

Box look: The boxy cut is not flattering on anyone and, unfortunately, designers such as Hermès, Céline, Dolce and Gabbana, Valentino, Chanel, and Miu Miu, are all culprits of incorporating this style disaster. While I understand its influence—the masculine look—it doesn’t flatter the female form. Sadly, a lot of the designers have cute additives such as fun colors and interesting asymmetrical details (buttons, zippers, etc.) but the box cut as the foundation is horrendous. I hope that in the fall I don’t see a bunch of so-called fashionable cardboard boxes walking down the street.

Futuristic: I love when designers step into the future, it is 2011 after all and shouldn’t we all be two steps from the Jetsons in flying cars? ? However, there’s a fine line that must be danced when heading into futuristic fashions. They aren’t usually the most practical, and that’s acceptable, but fashion should not look like one is stuck in a torture device. And that’s the issue with the futuristic looks in Alexander McQueen, Rebecca Minkoff, and Vivienne Tam’s collections. It looks like we’re on the brink of a caged battlefield in some of the looks, others look like overly done Hollywood costumes. So, this is more of a warning for fall fashions, be very aware of what’s appropriate for the future, in the Fall.

Draping: It should never look like a designer had too much fabric left over and for economical purposes decided not to save it for net year, and so, threw it on the model’s body. Loose, flowing, and free designs are great. But, Giorgio Armani and BCBG, among others, went too far in some of their pieces which look like they just threw excess material on their designs. Clothes should flatter and accentuate, they should cascade across or down the body, and never should they just hang there like a dead animal.
