Everything You Need To Know About Laser Hair Removal

After years of suffering through Brazilian bikini waxes and shaving, I finally bit the bullet and bought a package of laser hair removal sessions through a deal I bought on Lifebooker. After just my first session, there is no turning back and I’m angry at myself for not trying this sooner.

Firstly, laser hair removal does not hurt, which is amazing. It’s also super quick – like you’re done in 20 minutes. Added bonuses: The price of sessions have gone down dramatically while the technology has gotten worlds better, so it’s really a win-win.

I paid $170 for 8 sessions to remove hair in my whole bikini area. The deal seemed amazing, especially by Manhattan standards where the same package could cost nearly $2000 on the same exact machine. Before pulling the trigger on my deal, I did extensive research on the spa to make sure that others had great experiences. On Yelp, the reviews were great so that was the determining factor.

Here’s what you need to know before doing laser: You can’t wax or tweeze the areas you want to laser during the process, but you can shave. So, no waxing or tweezing for the entirety of your sessions, but you shave the area the day before your session.

The day of my session I showed up and stripped down. The practitioner gave me a pair of protective goggles to wear during the process. First, they will rub a clear jelly of sorts on the area they are lasering. Advanced warning: it’s cooold. Then, the practitioner will run the handheld laser back and forth over the area you are treating. Some parts will pinch a bit, but for the most part the most uncomfortable part of the ordeal is the cold jelly. If you get you Brazilian done be warned that they REALLY get in there. And, you will be flipping over too. After 20 minutes, you’re free to go and can schedule the next session for 6 weeks later.

It’s been three weeks since my session and the hair hasn’t grown back with the exception of a few pieces here and there, which is pretty amazing since it is supposed to take 8 sessions to get these results. Also: no ingrown hairs or bumps from shaving. To be sure, everybody’s skin and hair reacts differently, so my results won’t necessarily be yours. It’s been fantastic not having to shave the area at all, and from what the practitioner explained to me, the growth will become less and less with each session.

If there are certain areas you are self conscious of or are sick of shaving or waxing, I’d absolutely recommend turning to laser. It’s quick, inexpensive and the results are amazing, especially ahead of the summer!
