Dyson Airwrap Review: It Doesn’t Work

Editor’s update: Since writing this review, I found a $30 product that is WAY better than the Dyson airwrap, is heatless and works every time. If you are looking for beautiful curls and waves, I’d skip the Airwrap and just buy this Mane Label Sway heatless Curling Ribbon. I promise you will be thanking me.

Dyson Airwrap Doesn't Work
I tried the Dyson Airwrap with high expectations of great waves. But, the sad reality is that it doesn’t work.

I recently tried Dyson‘s newish hair blow dryer system, the Dyson Airwrap,  and I had really high hopes. After a few days of using the product I have to say that I was really unimpressed. What drew me to the Airwrap is that Dyson has state-of-the-art technology to quickly blow dry your hair. This particular item was sold out for a very long time and had endorsements from the celebrities like the Kardashians and celebrity hairstylists, so I really wanted it to solve the years-long problem for me which is getting my hair to look smooth and in sexy big waves without taking SO much time.

I have tons of really thick hair that takes very long to  dry and, when I dry it it’s kind of all over the place and then needs to be flat ironed and then curled to get beach waves or big curls I like. I have long been eyeing Dyson’s Supersonic hair dryer which retails for nearly $400 and planned on getting it for my birthday this year. (Update: I bought the Supersonic Hair Dryer, and you can read my review of it here. It is a life saver and cut my hair drying time down to less than 10 minutes) What appealed to me is that it supposed to cut the time it takes to blow dry my hair in half and the results should be a shiny smooth finish akin to a blowout.

When I told my sister-in-law that I was thinking about buying the Dyson hairdryer she told me that she just recently bought their Airwrap which is a newer version in their suite of hair drying tools and this version comes with attachments that would not only blow dry my hair but curl or wave and style at the same time. That would be a game changer for me because it would mean that I would cut my routine in more than half while drying and styling at once with the hopes of looking like a Victoria’s Secret angel with big sexy waves. This would be an expensive investment — the Airwrap retails for $550 — but if it did what it says it does, that would have been worth it for me.

So, we set out an a little experiment. Over the course of two days I used her Dyson Airwrap to try to achieve the look that I get on my own or even better. First, I watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials on the Dyson air wrap because there’s a learning curve to it. The reviews were really mixed. Some of the reviews and trials showed  curls that either didn’t hold or last, or looked kind of frizzy. Others had the beautiful big bouncy dramatic waves that I was looking to achieve. I should just have a disclaimer hear that my hair needs lots of heat for a curl to hold and  hot curlers don’t work on my hair. Really, the only thing that works for my curls are very hot curling iron’s like the Hot Tools or products at the highest temperature.

In one of the experiments, we sectioned off just the top part of my hair to try and dry and curl. The Airwrap was actually fairly easy to use after watching the tutorials and my hair did initially curl very nicely into very tight curls, but by the time I got to the other side of my head the curls dropped down and didn’t seem like they were going to last. After a few hours my hair was pretty much straightened it actually didn’t look as smooth and nice as it normally does when I curl it.

I was disappointed with results, but I wanted to do a full trial and do my full head of hair. The next morning I washed my hair completely and set about drying and curling it with the Dyson Airwrap.  I did this section by section and at the end my hair was curled and wavy, but it was definitely starting to drop, and even when it was at its best right after curling it, it wasn’t that smooth style that I normally go for. Instead, it was more frizzy and unstructured and not very polished looking. So even if the curls didn’t drop, I’m not sure I would’ve loved it. After about two hours the curls had completely dropped again which was not ideal.

Now I would say that this was not the right product for me, and if your hair does not take to l hot rollers I don’t think it will work on you either. Instead,  I am opting to buy the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer because that will least save me time and drying my hair.

Something else I recently bought which has actually been a game changer that is just $30 is this Sway Heatless Curling Ribbon from Mane Label Hair.  Guys, this is the best hair product I have ever bought and it gives me Victoria’s Secret Angel waves and curls without ANY heat and they are more beautiful than my curling iron curls. Even better, I sleep with it in and in the morning, I take it out and I have instant curls that need no styling. Sometimes, I use it on Second, third or fourth-day hair for a few hours and voila, curls. I swear this product is better than the Dyson and it’s a fraction of the price.

I also found that the Revlon hair dryer that has a brush attached to it actually works great and it was only $50 on Walmart.com. I bought it sort of on a whim after reading a blog post by Cup of Jo and I said you know if it doesn’t work it was $50 who cares? It’s actually been great and it really achieves that blowout look and dries really smoothly.

Lastly, I splurged on a GHD hair straightener and it was worth the $200. My hair has never been this straight and frizz free. Highly, highly recommend it. It not only gets your hair super straight, but you can use it to create beach waves and hair flips. On days that I wash my hair and use my Dyson and the GDH, my hair goes from wet to styled in less than ten minutes and last for four days without washing.
