In this Designer Spotlight I’m very excited to introduce you all to talented model-turned-designer Katerena Alkhimova, who is behind Kat Basics, a line of simple, classic pieces made from 100% cashmere. Kat got her start as a model, and then made her transition into the design world and began working directly with designer John Galliano at Christian Dior. Not bad, right? Keep reading to find out all about Kat!

BellaVitaStyle: You started your career as a model – did you always know you wanted to design clothes too?
Katerena Alkhimova: As long as I can remember, since I was a little girl, I was always in love with fashion. I became more seriously involved with the design when I got the job as an assistant designer of John Galliano at “Dior.”

BVS: How did you get started?
KA: In New York, 2 years ago, I felt I really needed to express myself. In terms of fashion, I had something to say and I needed to say it. I decided to call my company “Kat.” In a few months, my ideas were becoming reality and I was selling my products online at katbasics.com.

BVS: What do you draw inspiration from?
KA: I am simply inspired by women: their femininity, elegance, and uniqueness.

BVS: Who are your five favorite designers?
KA: John Galliano, Azzedine Alaia, Stella McCartney, Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garcons

BVS: What are the six pieces every woman should have in her wardrobe?
KA: Definitely at least one Katbasics Large Circular scarf; a black cocktail dress; a sexy red dress/red high heels combo; a good leather jacket; a pair of “boyfriend” jeans; a cashmere sweater.

BVS: Which designer or celebrity’s style do you admire the most?
KA: Currently, I am fond of Rachel Zoe. She is so cute and adorable. Also, it is nice to see someone so dedicated; it’s inspiring.

BVS: What trends do you think will be big this fall?
KA: Sheath dresses and leather jackets are really big right now. Also, it’s funny, I was looking for shearlings last winter but hardly found anyone doing them. They are in every collection this fall/winter season!

BVS: What makes your line different from other designers?
KA: When designing my pieces I don’t rush after trends. My cashmere pieces are simple yet elegant. In addition, I design clothing mainly for comfort.

BVS: What has been the best or most surreal part of being a designer?
KA: Working side by side with John Galliano was certainly up there. Also, seeing my ideas transform into reality is so exhilarating. And, of course, watching women appreciate my garments is immensely special and affirming for me.

BVS: Do you have any plans to branch out from cashmere into other fabrics and styles?
KA: I like the idea of designing basics. I see a lot of potential there. I am focused on cashmere at the moment, but I will branch out a bit more in my next collections.

I love the concept of designing simple, elegant, affordable pieces that are classics rather than trends – it’s right up my alley! At the moment, these pieces are only available online, so if you want more information or to purchase something, be sure to check out www.katbasics.com.
