Designer Spotlight: Jen Mascali

By Francesca Claybrook

This week’s designer spotlight is on Jen Mascali, a talented handbag designer who moved all the way to Italy to focus on her craft.  A passion for design must run in her blood – the descendant of shoe designers, it’s no surprise that Mascali began working with leather herself.  A move to Florence, Italy to further develop her design and construction skills seems to have paid off; her dedication to creating a quality product and attention to detail is obvious.  After getting to know a little more about Ms. Mascali, make sure to visit her website, www.jenmascali.com.

Bella Vita Style: How did you get started?
Jen Mascali: Hmmm…I was introduced to art at an early age, traveling to art shows with my mother, sitting for hours watching my grandfather draw and watching his father turn leather into incredible shoes, wearable art. I always had the feeling that I would create a line of my own, based on the inspirations that run through my veins…After years of learning, dreaming and developing my desires, I came to the point where I was ready to begin my own work and put my ideas into production.
BVS: You moved to Florence, Italy to really work on your craft.  What made you decide to make that move?
JM: Florence is a center for the leather goods industry, from the finest tanneries to the master craftsman.  One of the main goals I intend to establish with my brand is to preserve the beauty and integrity of the “Made in Italy” label. The quality and techniques are simply superior and are truly becoming a lost art in the world. It is my hope to maintain and promote these Italian artisans through my work.  I am fortunate enough to have been able to combine my work with living in the most beautiful city in the world. The landscape, architecture and warmth of the people, make living here a fairytale every day.  The culture exudes a freedom of expression, helping me to achieve greater creativity and joy in my life.  So yes, moving to Florence has been good for me!
BVS: Who are your five favorite designers?
JM: Lagerfeld, McQueen, Rick Owens, Miuccia Prada, Madame Coco Chanel- God, for all women in Fashion!
BVS: In your opinion, what are the six pieces every woman should have in her wardrobe?
JM:
Fitted black leather biker jacket
Ray-Ban Aviator Sunglasses
Jeans that fit well
An eclectic mix of silver bangle bracelets
The perfect nude pump, at least 4 inches high
A big handbag that makes you feel good
*** and red panties-for good luck, of course!
BVS: Which designer or celebrity’s style do you admire the most?
JM: Kate Moss
BVS: What trends do you think will be big this spring, in accessories or otherwise?
JM: I’m looking forward to the “rich hippie” vibe that many designers presented during the spring shows.  Perfect for a Jen Mascali fringe bag!
BVS: What makes your pieces different from other designers?
JM: My designs are meant to evoke the spirit of the individual wearing them, handbags that dance with the soul. I want to create a lifestyle, not just a label.
BVS: What has been the best or most surreal part of being a designer?
JM: Seeing my drawings come to life and receiving praises from some of the most influential and respected people in the industry.
BVS: Do you have any plans to branch out from handbags into other accessories (or even clothes), or are you focused solely on that for now?
JM: To dream is everything and I never stop dreaming…but for now I’m enjoying every moment of creating bags…
BVS: Where can we buy your bags?
JM: Currently the collection is sold in Japan. The Spring 2011 collection will be available in Paris, St. Tropez, Hawaii, New York and Boston…visit www.jenmascali.com for further details.
