Designer Spotlight: Dana-Maxx

By Francesca Claybrook

Our next designer spotlight is on Dana-Maxx, a talented designer who has been dreaming of this career since childhood (seriously – more on that later!)  After graduating from FIT and working for high profile designers Betsey Johnson and Marc Jacobs, Dana-Maxx took the plunge and started her own label.  Keep reading to learn more about this designer (who in addition to being talented is also incredibly nice), including her upcoming role as a television star.
BellaVitaStyle: How did you get started?

Dana-Maxx: I always knew I wanted to be a designer.  When I was younger I had a store in my bedroom and my stuffed animals were my customers.  I would sketch ideas for them and write up invoices – true story!

BVS: You worked for both Marc Jacobs and Betsey Johnson before starting out on your own – what was it like working for them?

D-M: It was amazing.  Although they were totally different environments, I had the opportunity to hone my skills at both places.  I was able to work directly with Betsey because she’s a very hands-on designer, while Marc Jacobs’ company is just much bigger.

BVS: What inspires you?

D-M: Architecture is a huge inspiration, and just walking around the streets, or looking at things in a new way.

BVS: Who are your favorite designers?

D-M: Diane von Furstenberg, because I’d love to have a go-to brand like hers someday; Betsey Johnson, for her humility and her youthful spirit; Marc Jacobs, because he has such an incredible company; Matthew Williamson for his use of color; and Christian Lacroix because everything he makes is just beautiful.

BVS: In your opinion, what are the six pieces every woman should have in her wardrobe?

D-M: A great heel, a great cardigan you can put on over a dress, a good fitted pair of pants (because they’re so hard to find), a little black dress that reflects your personal style, and a great accessory, because that can change your whole look.  Oh and a bold lipstick, because a great color can really make an outfit!

BVS: Which designer or celebrity’s style do you admire the most?D-M:  Blake Lively.  She really understands fashion.  She just gets it, which is rare for a celebrity.BVS:  What trends do you think will be big this spring?

D-M: Military is still big.  Soft prints are always good, and easy blouses.  Women are looking for more of an effortless, minimalistic feel within their wardrobes.

BVS: What makes your pieces different from other designers?

D-M: The line is very architectural, but consistently feminine, sexy, and edgy. I also love mixing medias and marrying bright pops of color with neutrals.

BVS: What has been the best or most surreal part of being a designer?

D-M: The best part is being able to connect with people through the art of clothing, engaging them and making them feel good about themselves.  The most surreal part is how fast things move and change in this industry.

BVS: I understand you’re one of Glamour magazine’s Ambassadors.  How did you get that, and what does it entail?

D-M: I received an email from Glamour saying I was chosen as an official Glambassador. Glamour magazine is just such a great platform to be associated with. As a Glambassador I promote Glamour magazine.

BVS: Can you tell us anything about your chance to work with Elle’s Joe Zee?

D-M: I was chosen as one of the eight designers for Sundance channel’s new fashion TV series, All On The Line. I had the rare opportunity to work directly with Joe Zee and I learned so much from him. I look to him as a mentor because he is just so inspiring. I am very grateful to everyone at the Sundance channel, Authentic TV (the production company), Joe Zee and Elle magazine.

BVS: When can we see the show?

D-M: It premieres on Tuesday, March 29th at 10pm on the Sundance channel, and my episode airs on April 26th at 10pm.

BVS: Finally (and most importantly), where can we buy your clothes?

D-M: They’re available at select stores across the US and online at our website http://www.dana-maxx.com.
