Designer Q&A: Kaelen

By Francesca Claybrook

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Kaelen Farncombe backstage before the presentation of her Fall 2011 collection (see the review HERE).  Check out what she had to say about her inspirations and the craziest part of Fashion Week:
BellaVitaStyle: What inspired this collection?
Kaelen Farncombe: It was inspired by cowgirls, and I wanted it to be Western without being too literal.  I wanted it to feel homey and special – classic pieces made modern, handcrafted grandfather sweaters, and stuff like that.  I did branch out this year in terms of the colors I used – there are more bright colors than I’ve used in the past.
BVS: Where did you get the inspiration for the hair and makeup?
KF: The makeup is monochromatic and modern and goes with the feel of the collection.  It’s understated and earthy, which complements the clothes without overpowering them.  As for the hair, when I was on vacation in Mexico I got three braids (because what says vacation like braids?) and really liked the look and feel of it.
BVS: What is the craziest part of Fashion Week for you?
KF: Everything about it is really crazy, but the lead up is especially insane.  And the work never stops – the day after the last presentation, the work on the next one starts!
Ps – Kaelen had an amazing manicure!  The colors on her nail actually faded from purplish gray at the tips to almost clear by the base.
