The Advertising Standards Agency banned two Louis Vuitton ads in the U.K., claiming that the ads misled customers. In the ads (one shown) a woman sews the handle of a purse, in the other one a seamstress is making a wallet. The first ad says : ” “The seamstress with linen thread and beeswax. A needle, linen thread, beeswax and infinite patience protect each over-stitch from humidity and the passage of time. One could say that a Louis Vuitton bag is a collection of details. But with so much attention lavished on every one, should we only call them details?”
The problem? Louis Vuitton’s products are made by machine, not hand and the authorities thought the ads conveyed the wrong message. Parts of its products are handcrafted, but not the majority. Looks like the ads are backfiring, instead exposing the company’s use of machinery rather than giving the warm, fuzzy, hand-crafted feel. What do you think of the ads?
