Five years ago, I would have defined knee-length spandex shorts as the unfortunate uniform of cyclists and male swimmers; anyone else attempting to wear these thigh-hugging bottoms would have been, in my opinion, committing a colossal fashion faux-pas. Recently, however, bike shorts have been taking the fashion world by storm. Whether being flaunted by celebrities or flooding runways at spring fashion week, they are getting some serious recognition.
When did this happen and who decided that the conservative cousin of spandex shorties could be a style statement?
Kim Kardashian is likely responsible, at least in part, for this sudden interest in the shorts. She has been spotted on numerous occasions sporting the shorts with oversized hoodies, thigh high crocodile boots, and everything in between. (You can read our post on how Kim made biker shorts cool here.) And then, Kylie Jenner wore $8,000 Swarovski-covered biker shorts for her 21st birthday.
Sound like a bold Kardashian move? This unique style choice is not as far out as one might think! There’s no need to be intimidated because bike shorts have proven themselves to be quite wearable for everyone- not just cutting-edge Kim! Surprising and inspiring fashionistas everywhere, they continue to gain recognition and approval in the high fashion arena. At spring fashion week, bike shorts were spied gracing the runways of Fendi, Chanel, Stella Mcartney and others. The versatility of the garment was accentuated with every designer. Looks featuring bike shorts ranged from classic black ensembles to elegant printed sets to oversized button ups and utility belts! It’s no wonder bike shorts are being so well received; being weather practical, fashion forward and versatile, they are the perfect spring statement piece. They’re also flattering for every body type. Who doesn’t love a good high waisted short? Whether paired with a cool jacket and sneaks or stepped up with an eye catching top and heels, the possibilities for are
truly endless. The perfect pair of bike shorts might just be a new favorite wardrobe staple! Who knew this cringe to fringe item could be such a crowd pleaser?
