90s Fashion Is Fall’s Biggest Trend

By Yasmine Duran

Knee high socks, plaid skirts and scrunchies?? Ugh, as if! But wait… what if the trends that were infamous in the 90’s are making a comeback? Well, Fashion Week, celebs and fast fashion stores are giving it a thumbs up!

Ah, Clueless. I remember watching Alicia Silverstone rocking her matching blazer and skirt set when I was nine and thinking it was hideous, then as I grew older I saw her look as iconic. Now, maybe you don’t feel as though you could pull of a checkered matching set on a regular day at work or school, but I have a few pieces and ways to wear them anywhere.

Trend #1: The scrunchie

90s Fashion
Bella Hadid was likely a baby in the 90s, but here she is rocking a scrunchie.

This is totally easy and the best way to “baby step” into the trend (even though it is literally the only trend from the 90s that our editor in chief is upset is making a comeback). Get that hair out of your face, all while having some fun with your hair accessories. These can be found just about anywhere- Amazon has the best bulk deals for cheaper prices than a department store. Also, a good gateway 90s fashion accessory is the choker, which made a roaring comeback last year.

Trend #2: Plaid

90s fashion
A matching plaid suit isn’t for everyone, but Emily makes it work a la Cher Horrowitz.

Now hear me out… I’m not saying go completely ridic and match from head to toe (unless you’re feeling like making a statement), but plaid is timeless and very chic if you pair it nicely! And, if I’m being honest, who doesn’t love Cher Horowitz? My favorite way to wear plaid in the fall is by wearing it on a cute skirt and a simple soft sweater tucked in or styling some chic pants to give off effortless boss babe vibes. The best places to find plaid skirts in the fall are H&M and Forever 21. I like shopping at Gap and Banana Republic for the pants, $98.

Also, plaid skirts a la Britney Spears in “Hit Me Baby One More Time” are all over the stores right now. Our editor recently purchased this plaid skirt from Forever21 for $18 as a way to relive her Catholic school days.

Trend #3: Knee-highs (jk, they’re atrocious) *Turtlenecks

90s fashion
Victoria Beckham manages to make a turtleneck look sexy.

Call me biased, I will just never be a fan of knee high socks. Unless you’re playing soccer, it’s a no from me honey. Turtlenecks however, are a classic staple and a trend I believe is going to always be here to stay. I’m talking any type of fabric, print or length- the turtle is here for us fashionistas! To my surprise, Forever 21 has the most affordable ones and mine has lasted me four years so far! They can be worn with jeans, skirts, overalls- you name it!

Trend #4: Velvet

90s fashionOk, probably one of my top faves… right next to corduroy. I can’t help it, I love me a nice velvet. I don’t know what it is, just something about the material comes off as sexy and different! The pieces that come to mind from my closet are a velveteen bodycon dress and statement booties. Velvet has been used to make all types of different articles of clothing, so no doubt will you find a piece unique to your styling needs. A great place to search is Urban Outfitters.

Trend #5: Trainers

90s fashion
Chunky sneakers are unfortunately making a comeback

The days where you made fun of your dad and tourists for wearing these on their feet are over, sis! Now, even Balenciaga and Gucci are taking their own twists on the fun trend! I can’t tell if these are here for the long haul; I sure hope they are. There is no specific way to pair them, I think you can wear them with just about anything and they’ll give you a cool street style edge. Make sure to pay a visit to Asos and Nasty Gal for a pair.
