NYFW Trends: Pastels and Neons

By Joey Cahue

New York Fashion Week, otherwise known as NYFW, is conquering the runways with the newest designs, models, and artists. Every year, the designs get even more intricate and big-named retail stores work as fast as they can to replicate the newest designs in their stores. To make sure we’re clear, the clothing presented in NYFW this fall, is clothing that’ll be in for spring. Let’s take a look at one of the common trends this year: pastel and neon.

Pastel and neon are such bright, airy and flexibly fun shades of colors that could work with anything. Pastels tend to be neutral and calming, while neons tend to be zany and out-of-the-box. Personally, I’m a big fan of pastels and cannot stop buying pastel nail polish regardless of the season. I like to stick with neons for summer nail polish.

Color was a central theme to the New York Fashion Week spring shows. Neons and pastels were common.

This dress gives off such go-go dancer vibes to me, but the twist is the bright pink shade and red boots. The model’s flipped out hairstyle creates a Barbie-like look. The dress looks rather comfortable!

Highlighter colors are making a comeback, as can be seen here at Prabal Gurung

Normally, this isn’t a shade I would go for but in the wake of NYFW, anything is possible. Gurung does a fabulous job of dragging out the dress to be long, but mixing mesh and adding a satin-like cloth to the bottom. Model Amanda Murphy looks fierce and confident in this piece.

Spring 2019 is a bifurcation of colors. Either really bold and bright, or more subdued pastels like in this Pamella Roland dress

If I could travel back in time long, long ago (maybe not THAT long ago) I would be back in high school choosing this as my prom dress. I think the whimsical neutral pastel tones look beautiful against the black floral sewn in design.
