Dolce & Gabbana’s ads in Asia depict Chinese models eating pasta and canollis with chopsticks.

The China fiasco: Ahead of its runway show in shanghai, D&G released a series of web advertisements to create buzz. In them, Chinese models are eating items like cannolis and  non-Chinese foods using chopsticks. The ads also have a voiceover that mocks the way Chinese people speak.

To add insult to injury, messages sent from Stefano Gabbana’s Instagram account leaked , including a message that complained of a “China Ignorant Dirty Smelling Mafia.” Given the growing wealth in China and their desire for all things luxury, this is not a fortuitous entry into the country.

Selena Gomez: In 2018, Stefano posted really cruel comments on photos of star Selena Gomez. He commented publicly: “E proprio brutta” which means ‘she is really ugly’.  Selena has one of the biggest Instagram followings int he world, so not necessarily the best choice of words.

On IVF and gay adoption: In 2015, the openly gay designers told an Italian magazine that they oppose gay adoptions and that the only family is a traditional one. The two also spoke out against artificial insemination and IVF saying “You are born to a mother and a father — or at least that’s how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog.”
The comments did not sit well with many in the fashion community, and Elton John even called for a boycott of the clothes.

This D&G ad depicting a woman being pinned down caused a backlash.

Ad Campaign Glorifying Rape: In 2007, their “fantasy rape” advertisement received backlash across the globe, especially in Europe, for glorifying violence against women and gang rape. Spain banned the ad and other countries followed suit boycotted the brand.
