Between the Black Lives Matter movement and the Coronavirus pandemic, it is more important than ever to support Black-owned small businesses. Next time you add an item to your Amazon cart, think twice about how you can help lift up the broader community and vote with your dollars. We are going to be making a concerted effort on BellaVitaStyle to link to more products from Black-owned business, so if you have any recommendations, please reach out. Here’s our guide to Black-owned bookstores, beauty brands, home brands, and breweries that we love.

We are officially done buying our books from Amazon. Going forward we are pledging to support independent and Black-owned bookstores.

Bookstores

Beyond Barcodes Bookstore: Beyond Barcodes is a Black-owned bookstore, featuring books by Black authors. They also serve coffee and are known for having a tight knit community of customers. Their online store is currently offering flat rate shipping across the United States.

The Lit Bar: The Lit Bar’s slogan says it all: Bookstore and Chill. The Lit Bar is a bookstore located in The Bronx that features diverse books for all ages. The bookstore also serves as a wonderful gathering space for the community and has a wine bar. While they are still closed due to the Coronavirus, their online shop is open and shipping across the nation.

Semicolon Bookstore: Semicolon bookstore is currently Chicago’s only Black woman-owned bookstore and gallery space. Semicolon is committed to nurturing the connection between literature, art, and the pursuit of knowledge, while providing a space for community.

Café Con LibrosCafé Con Libros is an intersectional feminist bookstore located in Brooklyn, New York. They provide a great cup of coffee and a great community space for females. Until you can shop there in person again, their website is open for orders.

Panache Hair Company: Panache Hair Company is known for their high-quality hair products and excellent customer service. Owned by a young black-woman, Panache Hair Company has been continuously expanding since 2015.

Coloured Raine: Coloured Raine is an online beauty brand that is black woman owned. They currently have a team of 100% black workers. So not only are you supporting a black owned business, you are supporting their black workers. 

Mented Cosmetics: Mented Cosmetics was created by two black women after they realized they could not find a nude lipstick that matched their skin tone. They now feature an online store with highly pigmented (hence the name “Mented”) products for a wide range of skin tones.

Pholk Beauty: Pholk Beauty is a black woman owned skincare brand based out of Jersey City. Each week they craft vegan skincare in their lab which is typically open to the public. During the coronavirus, their online store remains open for orders.

Millie’s ApothecaryMillie’s Apothecary is a black woman owned all-natural skincare brand. They even feature online skincare consultations where they will find a skincare routine that works perfect for you!

Jungalow: Owner, Justina, started out as a home design blogger in 2009. Since then, she has grown Jungalow to an online retailer for all things home décor. Their goal is to help you bring good vibes home.

Southern Elegance Candle Company: D’Shawn, the owner of Southern Elegance, was born and raised in North Carolina, the same place where all her candles are hand-poured. Each candle is filled with a southern aroma. Southern Elegance is for anyone who wants their space to feel inviting.

Sheila Bridges Design: Shelia Bridge is the owner of Sheila Bridge’s Design and has previously been named America’s best Interior Designer by Time Magazine and CNN. She owns a small online shop, best known for its wallpaper and most of her inspiration comes from her current home, Harlem, New York City.

Rayo & Honey: Rayo & Honey is an online home shop based on out of Brooklyn, New York. They are best known for their pennants, which combine pop-culture, literature, and clean design aesthetic.

Breweries

Montclair Brewery: Montclair Brewery is based in Montclair, New Jersey and features West African ingredients, such as hibiscus, in their ale. Their brews are also gluten-free. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they are open for pick-up and delivery only. Delivery is limited to the surrounding area.

Union Craft Brewing: Based in Baltimore, Union Craft Brewing sports the tagline “Beer Unites!”. They are focused on making good beer and creating a place for people to come together. During the pandemic, they are providing curbside pickup and delivering to the greater Baltimore area.

Weathered Souls Brewing Company: Weathered Souls is based in San Antonio, Texas and has many old-school philosophies, such as relying on word-of-mouth for advertising and drinking local. They even are planning the release of a new beer called “Black is Beautiful” in which the proceeds of the brew will go towards social justice causes and ending police brutality.  Their taproom is now open, and they deliver to the greater San Antonio area.

Dirtbag Ales: Located directly off I-95 in North Carolina, Dirtbag Ale’s is the perfect place to unwind after a long day. They consider “dirtbags” to be people who break the status quo and “dirtbags” are welcome in their taproom! They are currently open for dine-in and pickup.
