Designer Spotlight: Rubytone

m_db73effe196146b786a06672d616cd35 We’re introducing a new feature called designer spotlight where we ask up and coming designers a few choice questions. I came across Rubytone and instantly fell in love with the collection. The line has this whimsical feel to it that draws from the Victorian period, creating a polished, elegant and feminine look. That’s why I chose Claire Vuillemot, Rubytone’s creator, as our first designer spotlight. If you know of a new designer who may make good future spotlights, email styleblogger@gmail.com

Following is my interview with Claire

How did you get your start in fashion?
Claire: It all started when I was in about 5th grade. My mother introduced me to vintage clothing, and let me borrow the most amazing faux pearl and bead encrusted 1950’s sweater. I was hooked on vintage clothing ever since…before it became such a huge trend, and I’ve been collecting pieces for years. A few years ago, I decided to act on the love of my hobby and decided to move to NYC and attend FIT’s fashion design program.
Before I even finished school, I was introduced to Phillia Downs, a fashion consultant through a mutual friend. I decided to try and start my own line with her guidance, and here I am! It all happened so fast….

What inspires your creations?
Claire: I am a fashion history nerd!! I’m fascinated with so many time periods…just to name a few…I love the Victorian and Edwardian periods- especially the menswear- its so girly in a way! I love the 1920’s and the 30’s, I find the silhouettes, the glamour and the Hollywood fantasy to be so intriguing and classic.

Who are your 5 favorite designers?
Claire: Coco Chanel, Alber Elbaz, Alexander McQueen, Christian Lacroix, Marc Jacobs

What look were you going for in Rubytone’s spring collection?
Claire: I loved the idea of a small collection in classic neutrals with a petal soft peach accent. I kept the colors basic, but the designs a bit more complex. I used shell ruffles, delicate layers of tulle, and some assymetrical touches to keep things interesting and feminine. I also really wanted to use some every day fabrics like denim and cotton jersey, but in more unexpected ways. I feel like the pieces are easy and fun to wear, as every day garments or dressed up for a cocktail party or fabulous dinner date.

In your opinion, what are the 6 pieces every woman should have in her wardrobe?

Claire:
1- a pair of jeans that fit perfectly
2- a little black cocktail dress
3- a versatile little cropped jacket that can be worn alone or layered depending on the season or whim
4- a pair of red heels
5- a crisp white shirt
6- some kind of accessory with feathers or sequins

Which celebrity’s style do you admire the most?
Claire:This is tough, but I’ll say Kirsten Dunst. She’s always sweet, but a little edgy, and loves to rock vintage Chanel on the red carpet- which I love!

What trends do you think will be big this spring?
Claire: More loose silhouettes, especially with tops and dresses. Waistlines still creeping higher. A lot of black and gray, but probably a lot of bright colors too.

What makes your line different from other designers?
Claire: I think my designs are extremely versatile, while being unique and special. I focused on unexpected details and flourishes, while keeping the palette practical. Also my designs have a real chameleonic quality, depending on how you wear them. While always on the feminine side, they can be dressed up or down & combined with other pieces to make a look thats polished ands sophisticated, or creative and more street.

What has been the coolest/ most surreal part of being a designer?
Claire: Getting positive feedback from fellow designers and fashion lovers…. and preparing for my first fashion show, which I’m in the midst of right now!!

  1. I’ve acquired a bunch of feather and sequin hair pieces over the past few months and love to wear them on the weekends. I definately love this fun style.
