Milan Fashion Week: Gucci

By: Liz Hemmerle

This Spring/Summer 2012: Fashion Week has had me already envisioning slipping into modern 1920’s glam and enjoying next summer’s cool trends and warm weather. Milan Fashion Week kicked off yesterday, and already they are bringing on the glamour! Despite Italy’s current time of economic crisis, Frida Giannini, Gucci’s creative director, has managed to bring a glamorous distraction to the city of Milan. The trends on the runway have truly brought about an irresistible aesthetic that has not only caught the eye of fashion critics, but has made people forget crisis and recognize beauty.

Eclectic patterns, dropped waist lines, and major embellishment (which was also a favorite trend of mine) have been taken to a new level. Most of the art deco designs were “flapper” fringed dresses and sequined blazers however this trend could easily make it into your wardrobe in the spring and stay there through the summer. A stand out patterned top or even odd shaped embellished piece of jewelry could easily interpret this trend for an everyday girl like myself!

The ornamentation of the dresses, pants, and blazers played a huge role in this collection. I predict this to be a major trend because it’s carrying over from Fall 2011. This is good new for us girls who own a chic metallic embellished clutch, because we can keep them out all year long! So the question remains, what is black, white, and gold all over? The answer should be easy because it’s definitely this season’s Gucci collection.

Fitted blazers and harem pants, I would say that’s the best of both worlds. I love the intricate detailing of the blazers at Gucci this season. The modernization of the typical “form-fitting blazer” can add flavor to any outfit. The eye-catching pattern of the loose fitting pants, yet the conformity of colors puts together the perfect spring look. This is one of my favorite ready-to-wear outfits, and is 100% wearable.

The sleek yet modern incorporation of fringe on the runway gives us a little something to have fun with this season. The fringing of a simple bathing suit cover-up or even an art deco dress is a great way to spruce up your wardrobe. This embellishment is not your typical fringe associated with the wild wild west but with the roaring 20’s and sheer garments.

The few pieces Gucci showed that were modern simplicity were truly breathtaking. The cut and lines of the garment are going to play a big role this spring/summer. Plunging necklines and a drop waist are an unexpected combination that works. Can’t do both? Pick one! A plunging neckline paired with a super fitted skirt is great for a night out on the town, you’ll be turning heads.
